Art Instructor — Enrichment Program

About the Position

The Pyrkes of Learning Academy is seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and engaging Art Instructor to join our Enrichment Program.

The Art Instructor will plan and facilitate meaningful, age-appropriate art experiences for children ages 3.5 to 12 that encourage creativity, imagination, self-expression, exploration, and skill development. This role is ideal for someone with a strong creative background who enjoys creating engaging experiences for children.

Our Art Instructor does more than lead art projects. They work collaboratively with classroom educators to connect art, classroom themes, children's developmental needs, and children's interests. Art experiences should provide opportunities for children to practice emerging skills, explore their interests, and reinforce concepts being explored in their classroom.

The Art Instructor will use observations, conversations with classroom educators, children's interests, and identified developmental needs to guide their planning and create meaningful enrichment experiences.

An art degree is not required. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate creativity, initiative, artistic experience, and the ability to develop meaningful experiences for children.

• Introduce children to a variety of art materials, mediums, techniques, tools, and creative processes.

• Provide clear, age-appropriate instructions and demonstrations whenever introducing a new activity, material, technique, tool, or process.

• Ensure children understand how to safely and appropriately use materials and equipment before beginning an activity.

• Guide children through new techniques while allowing them the freedom to make their own creative choices and interpretations.

• Encourage children to experiment, explore, problem-solve, and develop their own ideas.

• Provide a balance of process-focused and product-based art experiences, recognizing that both open-ended exploration and guided projects can support children's creativity, skill development, confidence, and learning.

• Guide children through step-by-step art projects and demonstrations when appropriate, while encouraging children to make individual creative choices and adaptations within the activity.

• Provide opportunities for children to share their ideas, discuss their creative process, and take pride in their work.

• Plan and prepare age-appropriate art experiences for children ages 3.5–12 based on their developmental needs, abilities, interests, and current classroom learning.

• Communicate and collaborate with classroom educators to understand current themes, concepts, skills, developmental goals, and areas of need within each classroom.

• Use children's interests, observations, developmental needs, and classroom learning to guide ongoing art planning.

• Extend classroom learning through art by drawing inspiration from books, stories, classroom experiences, themes, concepts, and topics being explored by the children.

• Create art experiences that connect learning concepts with hands-on artistic exploration and skill development.

• Intentionally incorporate opportunities to develop fine-motor coordination, scissor skills, pencil control, hand-eye coordination, problem-solving, creativity, communication, and self-expression.

• Provide a thoughtful balance of educator-guided experiences and child-led/free-exploration opportunities.

• Observe children's participation, interests, emerging skills, and areas of need and use these observations to inform future planning.

• Maintain accurate and timely program documentation, including observations, planning documentation, progress reports, and other program reports as required.

• Complete behavior reports, incident reports, accident reports, and other required documentation accurately, promptly, and in accordance with Academy policies and procedures.

• Communicate relevant observations, concerns, and information regarding children's participation, development, behavior, or well-being with classroom educators and Academy leadership.

• Work collaboratively with classroom educators to ensure art experiences complement and extend classroom learning and respond to children's developmental needs.

• Participate in staff meetings, training, professional development, and program planning as required.

• Follow all Academy policies, procedures, confidentiality requirements, health and safety requirements, and applicable childcare regulations.

• Provide active and attentive daily supervision while supporting children's safety, well-being, participation, and positive engagement.

• Use positive, respectful, and developmentally appropriate guidance strategies.

• Support children with emerging skills and provide appropriate assistance while encouraging independence.

• Prepare materials and the art environment before activities and maintain an organized, welcoming, and accessible space.

• Clean and sanitize art materials, work surfaces, and the enrichment space following activities.

• Maintain and organize art supplies and communicate when materials need to be replenished.

• Support safe and organized transitions between the enrichment program and classroom environments.

• Contribute to the overall cleanliness, safety, organization, and positive operation of The Pyrkes of Learning Academy when required.

What We're Looking For

Applicants must have:

• At least ECE Level 1 or Level 2 certification

• Current Child Care First Aid/CPR certification

• A current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search

• A demonstrated creative or artistic background

• Experience planning, creating, or facilitating creative activities is an asset

• The ability to work on-site at The Pyrkes of Learning Academy

Required Qualifications

Applicants selected for further consideration must be prepared to bring a portfolio of previous creative work and/or planned activities to their interview.

Your portfolio may include:

• Previously planned art activities or lesson plans

• Photographs of previous projects or activities

• Personal artwork or creative projects

• Child-focused art experiences you have planned or facilitated

• Activity instructions, demonstrations, templates, or other planning materials

Your portfolio does not need to demonstrate professional-level artistic ability. We are interested in seeing your creativity, planning ability, initiative, and ability to develop engaging and developmentally appropriate experiences for children.

A background in visual arts, crafts, design, theatre, photography, textiles, or another creative field is an asset.
